Mastering Hindi Grammar: 5 Common Mistakes to Avoid

Hindi grammar can be challenging, but understanding common pitfalls can dramatically improve your writing and speaking skills. Here are five mistakes that I see most frequently among my students.

1. Gender Agreement Errors

One of the most common mistakes is incorrect gender assignment to nouns and the subsequent agreement errors in verbs and adjectives. Remember that in Hindi, every noun has a grammatical gender, and all related words must agree.

2. Postposition Confusion

Hindi uses postpositions instead of prepositions. Students often confuse similar postpositions or use them incorrectly. Practice with examples is the best way to master these.

3. Verb Conjugation Issues

The Hindi verb system is rich and complex. Pay special attention to tense markers and the distinction between transitive and intransitive verbs.

4. Honorific Usage

Hindi has a sophisticated honorific system. Using the wrong level of respect can change the entire meaning of your sentence and may cause social discomfort.

5. Script Writing Mistakes

When writing in Devanagari, pay careful attention to the matra (vowel signs) placement and the distinction between similar-looking characters.
